Gloria Mensah, Solicitor

“When I had my first child at 38 weeks 5 days through natural birth, my milk did not come through straightaway. I stayed overnight on the maternity ward and the midwives continued, through the night, with breast massages to help with milk flow but still I didn’t have any colostrum and I opted to cup feeding because I was determined that I was going to breastfeed, and I knew that Nono volunteered to help me establish breastfeeding once I get home.

I was discharged from the maternity ward the following day with my baby cup feeding on artificial formula milk and I was advised to continue with the breast massages if I so wish.

Nono came home to help me establish breastfeeding as promised. She started by showing me how to hand express and massage my breasts before expressing. She emphasized the importance of putting my baby on the breast to suck first before offering her a cup feed with artificial milk.  She made me aware that I needed to do that every 3 hours including during the night in order for me to sufficiently stimulate the breast and calibrate a full milk supply. She also advised me to massage my breasts and express with a breast pump for 10 minutes from each breast to stimulate them fully.

She showed me how to position and attach my daughter to the breast. She also showed me several positions so that I could choose the one which works for us. Nono recommended that I express every 3 hours to boost my milk supply and this helped a lot.

From day zero my daughter appeared not to have any problem with sucking , the problem was my lack of knowledge in breastfeeding.  Nono’s continued support and advice in those first weeks were invaluable and has greatly informed my breastfeeding journey. I exclusively breastfed my daughter for the first 6 months before introducing solids and continued for more than a year. I always referred to Nono if I had any questions about breastfeeding.

Nono’s advice and support were in depth and as result I was able to exclusively breastfeed my second child for the first 6 months with so much confidence. Her support and advice have been invaluable and I would not have persisted with breastfeeding if it wasn’t because of her continued encouragement and the support she gave me” .

Nono Mwimbi helped me immensely as a first-time mother to establish my milk supply and understand correct lactation technique, all while recovering from a C-Section delivery. Nono took time to explain the physiology of labor in the days running up to my expected delivery date, helping me feel more confident before attending hospital. While I didn’t have a natural birth, Nono was quick to reassure me and went on to give practical advice on pain management following surgery e.g Epsom salt bath. I was disappointed that my milk supply wasn’t coming in as baby and I were separated, him being taken to the neonatal unit. However, Nono explained the stages of Lactogenesis which reassured me that my mature milk would eventually come in after colostrum.

She also consistently encouraged me to keep hand expressing while in hospital; showing me the technique and also setting out how often I should be expressing. I have no doubt that without this expert advice I would have given up on breastfeeding. After baby and I returned home, Nono visited

to ensure I was happy with lactation and baby was feeding well. Her care and passion helped me feel confident as a breast feeding mother which I will always be grateful for.

“Thank you for all your knowledge and support you provided me regarding breastfeeding my children. The knowledge you shared with me about the importance of breastfeeding in 2018 when I had my son, was very influential in my decision to exclusively. breastfeed my daughter now in 2021. I appreciated the knowledge you had about foods that I could eat and supplements such as fenugreek to increase milk production as my breast were not producing as much milk as I needed to continue breast-feeding. This information helped me in that instead of ceasing breastfeeding when he turned 12months, I was able to continue with breastfeeding for a further 6 months after that.

This time round 2021, you have provided me with support that I needed the most especially as we are in a pandemic. It has been difficult to seek and have support readily available from services, however I am glad that you were readily available with the right support regarding breastfeeding, general mood and staying calm. I appreciate your words of encouragement regarding staying calm and not stressing about the feeding regime as this could affect milk production and the baby if she senses that I am tense.

I worried a lot about whether my daughter was having enough milk as she constantly was on the breast especially early hours, but you gave me some valuable information regarding prolactin levels being at its highest especially early hours of the day, so the importance of letting her feed as this would stimulate milk production. I have to say you demonstrated that you have a wealth of knowledge regarding breastfeeding and supporting mothers regarding feeding and how to stay positive about as difficult as it might be especially when tired. Also It’s difficult to continue breastfeeding with sore nipples, I am glad you gave me support about how to ensure the baby latches on well to avoid and reduce the pain.

4 months on and she is doing very well still with her feeding, soonI am looking to introduce solids owever I will continue with breastfeeding as long as I can ensuring I eat the right foods to upportmilk production which will in turn support my daughter.

“Nono helped me a lot when I had both my babies. As a first time mother, she helped me walk the journey of labour, the expectations of labour and how to relax during labour which was indeed very useful. She also taught me on latching correctly, breastfeeding positions, how to express breast milk in order to boost my milk supply and these tools enabled me to enjoy breastfeeding both my children.

With my second baby, as he came preterm, she taught me on how to enable the baby to breastfeed well, and just knowing that he would feed for shorter periods because he was pre-term, encouraged me to navigate the early days of his birth. I am indeed grateful for this support and would recommend her to anyone who needs the birth preparedness and lactation support.”

“My pregnancy was a difficult one. I had severe SPD from week 20 and ended up needing an emergency c-section. Throughout the process, though, Nono was supportive, provided advice for a first-time mom, talked me through my questions and checked in to see how I was doing. Breastfeeding the little one was important to me, and Nono helped guide and encourage me. Having my baby was both challenging and fulfilling, so I’m glad I had people like Nono throughout the experience”.

“I had my baby on the 2nd of September 2021. I was struggling with breastfeeding because my nipples were hurting so badly. I mentioned it to my midwife and health visitor. They recommended nipple cream. Still, the pain and discomfort persisted, and I became anxious whenever my baby wanted to feed.

Fortunately, Nono reached out to me to find out how I was coping with breastfeeding. I told her that I was struggling to breast feed. She immediately showed me how to put my daughter to breast and showed me different positions. That helped to relieve the pain and anxiety. Breastfeeding became more enjoyable.

10 months later, my baby started refusing to be breastfed. Again, Nono asked me to do skin to skin. She started breastfeeding again 5 hours later.

Thank you to the best Lactation consultant.  Thank you Nono Mwimbi.
